Labradorite — Light in the Shadows
At first glance, labradorite appears gray and unassuming, but turn it in the light and flashes of blue, green, gold, and violet ignite across its surface. This phenomenon, called labradorescence, reflects the hidden brilliance within and serves as a reminder that light is always waiting to emerge from shadow.
In Daoist Five Element theory, labradorite embodies the Water element for its mystery and depth and the Wood element for its play of color and vision. Water nourishes Wood, creating a current of wisdom (zhi) that awakens creativity, insight, and new growth. Labradorite is often called the stone of transformation, guiding the wearer through change by strengthening intuition and aligning action with purpose.
Worn close to the body, labradorite calms an overactive mind, balances the Shen (spirit), and shields the aura. It helps dissolve fear and uncertainty while sharpening inner vision and trust in life’s unfolding. Across cultures, it has been seen as a stone of magic, used by shamans and healers to open pathways between the seen and unseen.
Mineral composition: Labradorite is a feldspar mineral, a calcium sodium aluminum silicate. Its labradorescence is caused by light refracting off layers within the crystal, producing the vibrant flashes that make each stone unique.
